The gran of tragic toddler who died after a horror car crash has issued her heartfelt thanks to medics whose heroic efforts allowed her to give her grandson a final kiss goodbye. Little Iain Mackay was just two-years-old when he lost his fight for life at the Sicks Kids Hospital in Glasgow in August 2021, after being critically injured in a two car smash.
A 44-year-old woman appeared in private at Wick Sheriff Court in May 2022 charged with causing Iain's death and seriously injuring his mum by careless driving. She made no plea and was released on bail. The case against her remains active. “I wouldn’t have got that opportunity to kiss him, to cuddle him and to read that last story. It was about a brave lion. We just wouldn’t have had that time with him.
“He was originally going to go to hospital in Aberdeen but when I was halfway down the road, I got a call to say that they were going to transfer him to Glasgow. I left Caithness and I drove to Glasgow because I needed to be with my grandson. “After the consultant had spoken to us and said that there wasn’t anything else they could do for Iain, we asked the doctors in Aberdeen if Ashlyne could be transferred to Glasgow once she was stable enough.
