Taoiseach Simon Harris, Tánaiste Micheál Martin and Green Party leader Roderic O'Gorman have repeatedly said that the Government will run its 'full term'

Belief is growing amongst some politicians in Fine Gael that Taoiseach Simon Harris will call an election before Christmas.

Mr Harris has faced repeated questions since becoming Taoiseach in April about when the next election will be held. However, some within his party are now arguing that a “change in language” may indicate that the election will be held before Christmas.READ MORE: Gráinne Seoige selected to stand for Fianna Fáil in upcoming general election

Asked about the election date on Monday, Mr Harris said: “My position on this is the same. When I became leader of my party, before I became Taoiseach, the other two party leaders asked me to commit to the Government going full term. I gave that commitment and my position hasn’t changed. No, I haven’t had any further discussions with them on it so far.”

Many politicians also told the Irish Mirror that having an election in March would give Fine Gael no “wriggle room” if a controversy emerges over the next number of months. They argued that a November date would allow them to push an election back if required. The Irish Mirror understands that the Leinster House bike shed controversy is currently being raised on the doorsteps by voters and politicians who are already canvassing across the country.
