The Guardians guaranteed a series win over Minnesota with a 6-4 win over the Twins on Saturday night.
MINNEAPOLIS — One night after brushing aside a six-run rally by the Twins, the Guardians called on their ace closer to prevent another late Minnesota comeback.
“We’ve got to figure out the end a little better,” Francona said. “It was getting a little hairy there. But it’s a good way to play. We just need to finish it a little better.” Cleveland took advantage of four walks and two hit batters to add a pair of runs off Twins reliever Cole Sands in the third after Sands was pressed into action when Archer exited with a tight pectoral muscle.
“We hit the ball out of the ballpark, that’s always gonna kind of change the course of the game,” Maile said. “Those homers have come early and after that we’ve really just stayed in the strike zone. There hasn’t been a whole lot of chase. We’ve made them kind of earn their outs by making pitches. Over the course of time, it’s got to be in your favor when you do that.”
Will Benson’s leaping catch against the wall in left field also robbed Kepler of extra bases in the eighth. Benson collided with the wall as he made the grab and stayed down on the warning track for a few seconds before bouncing up and flipping the ball to Amed Rosario as the two trotted off the field.
