Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn reveals that the upcoming film will finally explore Rocket's emotional origins. Although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came out back in 2017, the titular superhero team has cropped up in a number of other MCU movies, most recently in Thor: Love and Thunder. In addition to the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Star-Lord , Gamora , Drax , Rocket , and Groot are set to take center stage once more in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While many questions remain about how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will conclude the titular team's story, director James Gunn recently revealed in an interview with ComicBook.com that the film will delve into Rocket's backstory. The filmmaker is careful not to reveal too many details about what the upcoming movie has in store for fans, but does tease that Rocket's past will be a central focus of the entire emotional story he has planned.
"[The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special] is also very, very different than Volume 3 because Volume 3 is a really a very emotional movie. And it tells this story about Rocket and where he came from and where he's going, and how that ties into everybody else, and the end of this iteration of The Guardians. So, doing this goofy thing like once every four days, and then going and shooting four days of Guardians Vol. 3, and then going back, it almost created a lot of whiplash.
While Guardians of the Galaxy's reference to Halfworld doesn't confirm that the MCU version of Rocket has the exact same backstory as the comics' version, it's reasonable to suggest that there will be similarities. In the comics, after being abandoned by the robot caretakers, Rocket and the other animals continue to care for the ailing humans on the planet. At one point, Rocket even teams up with the Hulk to save Halfworld and rescue his kidnapped girlfriend, Lylla.
How Rocket's Marvel Origin Sets Up Emotional GOTG 3 Ending Cooper's version of Rocket has a short temper and often shies away from any sort of emotional vulnerability.
