The Guardians do it again!
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Don’t blame Chicago closer Liam Hendricks if he sees Cleveland’s Josh Naylor in his nightmares. The Guardians slugger has haunted Hendricks this season, and the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Guaranteed Rate Field was no different.
“That was shaping up like we had a nice comeback and they had a little better comeback,” Francona said. “But we held serve, and against a really good pitcher we got some runs. That’s not easy to do.” Naylor has reached base safely in five straight games, going 6-for-17 with a double, two home runs and eight RBI. Kwan has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games, batting .375 with six doubles, five RBI and 11 runs.
“A lot of the time when I’m leading off I try to see some pitches, but when runners are in scoring position, that’s when pitchers want to make their pitches and want to dominate at-bats,” he said. “I just try to get ahead early, trust my bat, trust my eye, put it in play and good things will happen.”“That’s a dawg right there,” Kwan said. “That’s nothing new.”
The run snapped McKenzie’s scoreless inning streak at 24 and marked the first time an opponent had scored against him since Minnesota torched him for seven runs on June 27. Francona said McKenzie was not feeling well at the end of his pregame bullpen session, but fought through it.
