This year’s Glasto will be a blasto from the pasto – and not in a good way. The headliners for the 2023 festival have been announced and what a vintage boys club lies in store 🖊️ Ed Power for ipaperviews
Lizzo and Lana Del Rey are among the stone-cold female superstars who will grace the bigger stages across the weekend. Yet they’ve been left in no doubt as to where they fit in the grander scheme, which is to play figurative second fiddle to Elton John , landfill indie survivors the Arctic Monkeys, and the Axl Rose travelling circus.
Fair enough – there’s no accounting for mega-stars and their schedules. But what a bad look it is to have two of the three headline slots go to thumpingly conventional guitar bands. In the case of Gun N’ Roses, in particular, it’s worth asking whether they would be better suited to the Sunday nostalgia slot. They haven’t released fresh material in decades. And their set – going by their European dates last summer – is essentially one more twirl around the retro maypole.
