Haaland header sinks Coventry while Tottenham avoid unwanted record in Forest stalemate
Manchester City, Coventry City, Erling Haaland

Manchester City made it three wins from three as Erling Haaland's first-half header earned a 1-0 victory over Coventry City, with deadline-day signing Enzo Fernández impressing on an unexpected start. Tottenham claimed their first point of the season with a 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest, narrowly avoiding a third straight defeat thanks to a controversial VAR ruling that disallowed Neco Williams' goal.

Erling Haaland's first-half header was enough to give Manchester City a narrow 1-0 victory over newly-promoted Coventry City at the Etihad, extending their perfect start to the Premier League season with three wins from three.

The decisive moment arrived in the 26th minute when Haaland rose to meet Antoine Semenyo's cross and power a header past the Coventry goalkeeper, capping a well-constructed move that began with Enzo Fernández in midfield. It was Haaland's third goal of the campaign and underlined once again why City remain the team to beat in the title race.

Fernández, the £125 million deadline-day signing from Chelsea, was originally listed among the substitutes but was thrust into Enzo Maresca's starting eleven after Nico O'Reilly picked up an injury during the warm-up. The Argentinian World Cup winner responded with an energetic and assured performance, showing the kind of range of passing and movement that had convinced City to spend so heavily on him.

He was also involved in a flowing attack that ended with Rayan Cherki striking a post, while later in the match he set up Haaland for what looked like a second goal, only for the Norwegian to be flagged offside. Fernández's display suggested that, once fully integrated, he could be transformative for Maresca's side.

Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, defended deep for long spells and managed just 22 percent possession, yet they grew into the contest and applied significant late pressure on the Premier League champions. Substitute forwards Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms both created opportunities as City were forced to cling on in the closing stages. The result leaves Coventry still searching for their first goal and first point since returning to the top flight, having now suffered three consecutive defeats.

Meanwhile, Tottenham earned their first point of the season after a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest, though the result did little to ease the pressure on head coach Roberto De Zerbi following a summer spending spree of almost £400 million. After opening defeats to Brentford and Newcastle, Spurs were at risk of becoming the first Tottenham team since 1980 to lose their first three league games of a season.

They were spared that fate only when a Forest goal was controversially chalked off by VAR midway through the second half. Neco Williams bundled the ball over the line from close range, but replays showed the final touch had come off his arm as he shielded his face from an incoming clearance, prompting furious protests from the home supporters. Tottenham remain without a goal in any of their opening three fixtures, a drought not seen since the 1974-75 campaign.

Chelsea loanee Mykhailo Mudryk made his first appearance in 646 days following the overturning of his drugs ban, while Dominic Solanke headed over late on as Spurs came closest to snatching all three points
