A largely uneventful race burst into life when it was ruined for Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz when race control was too slow to act before a loose wing mirror was run over and scattered shards across the Losail track

Another race control blunder ruined the Qatar Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz had their races blown up by the FIA's slow reactions.

Hamilton later picked up a second penalty for speeding in the pit lane which dropped him to dead last with 10 laps to go. He was eventually told to pit to retire the car, while Norris also ended the day with far fewer points than he would have expected. Charles Leclerc was second behind winner Verstappen, while they were joined on the podium by Oscar Piastri.

There was a second collision as Lance Stroll caused a collision with Alex Albon, spinning both cars though they were able to carry on after a visit to the pit lane. The Canadian was hit with a 10-second penalty and things got worse for Aston Martin when Fernando Alonso reported terrible straight line speed in his car.

Sainz also suffered a similar fate while many others were told to go through the pit lane and stop for fresh tyres rather than risk the straight. Shortly after, the safety car was called out so that the debris could be cleared, offering a very cheap stop to those who were yet to stop.
