Hands off my wood burner! It isn’t a middle class luxury 🔥 The crackdown ignores families like mine with no central heating ✒️ GeorgieR30

, which aims to improve air and water quality and cut waste. The plan states that new wood-burners in smoke control areas will only be allowed to emit 3g of smoke per hour, compared with 5g under current regulations.

While this may seem laudable in some respects and I am very much in favour of any policies in support of the environment, it completely disregards families like ours who have no major form of central heating in our homes. Many properties in our part of the world, on the edge of the Cotswolds, rely on wood-burners and night storage heaters to stay warm during the winter months.

It seems unfair to put the onus on families when we’re already reeling from the cost of living crisis and ruinous energy bills. Along with facing what is, fuel bills for typical households will rise by £500, from £2,500 to £3,000, in April. Our wood-burner was one of the first things that attracted me to our house when we moved from London. The fireplace it sits in is part of an old working forge where the blacksmith used to make horseshoes and it is the oldest part of the house. It’s thought to date back to the 1600s although the wood-burner is probably only around 30 years old and not as heat efficient as it could be.

Replacing it with a new one could set us back around £2,000, however and now these new restrictions, which limit the amount of smoke you are “allowed” to emit, act as even more of a deterrent.there were no plans to ban wood-burning stoves or open fires altogether, but said many owners didn’t understandThat’s all very well, but as Andrea Lee from environmental law charity Client Earth, pointed out, it’s really just “passing the buck”.
