The students who participate in the Big Tex Youth Livestock Auction spend all year preparing to compete.
The big winners, like Blondie, sell for a lot more than they’re worth in the food chain, and buyers don’t take the animals home, said Daryl Real, senior vice president of agriculture and livestock for the fair. The focus is on supporting the children, he said. “He honestly gets treated better than most humans do,” said Aven, who lives in the West Texas town of Anson and is part of the Jones County 4-H Club.
“Your job starts the day you get them,” Madden said. “It doesn’t end until the day you walk them into the ring. It’s a lot of hours, a lot of blood, sweat and tears.” “They’re really doing well bringing these buyers to the table, and we’re really excited about that,” he said. “When you’re passing out money, everybody’s all smiles.”The 2022 auction raised a preliminary amount of over $1.9 million. Last year, the auction raised a little more than $1.5 million, and 119 livestock scholarships were awarded.
