Harris County Commissioners Court on Tuesday could boost funding for county departments by around $12 million, three months after a lengthy political battle over the budget that culminated in adopting a lower-than-planned tax rate.

When the county defaulted to the no new revenue rate, the Harris County District Attorney's office lost out on $5.4 million in proposed increases, while the sheriff's office lost $16.6 million that would have funded patrol and administration. "Essentially, this was trying to figure out what's the amount of money we need to maintain current staffing levels on the law enforcement side through the end of the fiscal year," said Jason Spencer, the chief of staff for the sheriff's office."The county budget office looks at attrition and what it costs to run an academy, and comes up with what's the amount we need to just stay at our current staffing levels.
