Harrisburg police investigate shooting in Hall Manor. March 17, 2022 Sean Simmers |[email protected] community leaders are calling for more people to step up and help the young people who have been involved in city shootings over the last couple weeks.
“We wait until the problem arises and gets to a high point,” said Tone Cook, founder of Michael’s Memory, a Harrisburg anti-gun violence organization. “It’s at a point where it’s unstoppable.” Harrisburg has experienced 108 incidents of gun violence as of March 25, 2022, according to statistics provided by city officials. That’s nearly two incidents each and every day. At that rate, the city would be looking at 432 acts of gun violence by the end of the year.The amount of gun violence was higher last year with 469 gun violence incidents reported and even higher in 2020 with 560 gun violence incidents, according to city data.
Through his job at Capital Punishment Boxing Club, Kenion offers scholarships to city youth who are or seem at risk of heading down a path of criminal activity. The scholarship recipients get a year-long membership at the club, complete with boxing training and the opportunity to compete in matches. Kenion said multiple people have told him the scholarship had a large positive affect on their future.
“We’d rather have them in the gym than on the street selling drugs and getting shot,” he said. “If they don’t have an outlet, they’re going to be on the street.”
