The real Player of the Year should be Harry Kane. Scoring 30 goals in that Spurs side makes him the don. tickerscricket makes a compelling argument for Kane Haaland.
We genuinely cannot think of any other time where a supposedly big club has had one player operating on a plane so vastly different to every single one of his team-mates. Certainly since Rodrigo Bentancur’s innocuous-looking but ultimately season-ruining injury at Leicester, Kane has been the one and only bright spot in a grim campaign. He even scored a typically high-class goal in the 6-1 humiliation for the ages at Newcastle as if to hammer home a long-belaboured point.
Since the Premier League was reduced to 20 teams and a 38-game season in 1995/96, the only players to score more goals than Kane’s 30 this season are Haaland, Mo Salah , Alan Shearer , Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez . All of these are notably excellent players. None of them were playing in a team that was absolute shit. Even Sunderland managed to finish seventh on the back of Kevin Phillips’ absurd outlier 30-goal season in the olden times.
To make the direct comparison with Haaland, imagine a bizarroworld where the two swapped clubs this season for some reason. Which achievement are you more confident the other would replicate? We’re not remotely convinced Haaland would score 30 goals in this Spurs team, but Kane scoring 36 for that City team? And the rest, with double-figure assists to go with it.
But it’s not true; it’s just that this season his team-mates have been unable to take advantage. Only 10 players this season have more ‘shot-creating actions’ than Kane’s 131, and none of that top 10 are central strikers. Among those behind Kane on that metric are James Ward-Prowse, Trent Alexander-Arnold and, significantly Son Heung-min and literally every other Spurs player.
