Ugly victory for Irish province against Leicester, who played the better rugby at times
Champions Cup: Leinster 36 Leicester Tigers 22, a performance that contained only fitful quality. They march on to a meeting with perennial foes La Rochelle at the same venue next weekend.
Leinster looked a little distracted early on and paid the price when Leicester struck first, James Cronin’s break and lovely offload the pivotal breach in an attack that culminated with outhalf Handre Pollard jogging under the Leinster posts for a try he converted. Leicester demonstrated some neat attacking back play, got outside the home side’s defence, which gave wing Ollie Hassell-Collins a run down the touchline, an attack that culminated with Sheehan penalised for not rolling away in the tackle in the shadow of the Leinster posts. Pollard closed the gap to 15-10.
James Lowe, sharp in attack, played an important defensive role as the interval loomed, an important foot block denied Hassell Collins, who again got free out wide, but the Leinster wing was able to deflect the grubber kick back from where it came. Leicester were soon on the front foot again, but Dan Kelly’s long pass was superbly picked off by Robbie Henshaw, who ran 60 metres to score a try which Ross Byrne converted. It gave the home side a buffer on the scoreboard that they needed at that point.
