Ellison owns 98% of the island, including the resort.
Jason Ganzagan worked as a chef on the Las Vegas Strip at “multiple 5-Star kitchens” before he started as a junior sous chef at Four Seasons Resort Lanai, according to the lawsuit. With one week’s notice, he moved to Lanai and started working there on Nov. 3, 2019. On his first day in the kitchen, Ganzagan noticed that there were neither Hawaii Department of Health law postings nor temperature logs for the refrigerators and freezers, according to Maui County court documents. When he asked his supervisor, the executive chef, the chef replied, “I no run kitchen that way.”
No changes were made, so Ganzagan reported the safety and health violations to the resort manager in March 2020. He also reported instances of discrimination “that employees of Asian descent were being singled out for eviction from the hotel.” He received no response.
