Lava began spewing from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano on Thursday afternoon.

The alert level for the volcano was raised from a watch to a warning. The observatory said the primary hazard is volcanic gas, which can have far-reaching effects downwind.

When it's erupting, Kilaeuea continuously pumps out a combination of water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide that can turn into a visible haze known as vog. "Vog creates the potential for airborne health hazards to residents and visitors, damages agricultural crops and other plants, and affects livestock," the observatory said.

The volcano came back to life after lava stopped flowing from the Halemaumau crater last month, ending a prolonged eruption that started in September 2021. Mauna Loa, also on the Big Island of Hawaii, saw its first eruption in nearly 40 years when it began oozing lava on Nov. 22. The eruption was short-lived and ended in early December.
