The World Cup was expected to provide solace for Hazard who has endured a frustrating spell at Real Madrid since leaving Chelsea in 2019. In three years, Hazard has made just 51 appearnaces for the La Liga giants after injury struggles and a loss of form.Advertisement Real Madrid and Belgium teammate Thibaut Courtois jumped to Hazard’s defence after the draw with Croatia and admitted that being banished to the bench would have served as a blow.
“Eden has shown that he plays well,” said Courtois. “It’s a shame that he only played ten minutes. He’s doing very well, he deserves more chances. Psychologically, being a substitute would be a blow for him, I’m sure. He’s a great player and he can still give a lot to the football.”
