Diamondbacks prospect Jordan Lawlar is moving quickly through the minors, winning over believers along the way.

Jordan Lawlar stayed back just long enough, then reached out and hooked a slider into left field for a two-run double. The at-bat, which came on Saturday night in an Arizona Fall League game, was impressive on a number of levels, and it served as yet another data point for the latest Diamondbacks phenom to climb baseball’s prospect rankings.

Lawlar is winning over evaluators, not only further convincing them that his upside could be significant, but making some believe his arrival might come sooner than later, which would be good news for a Diamondbacks organization hoping to take a big step forward next year and in the years to come. The sixth overall pick in last year’s draft, Lawlar played just two games as a pro last summer before suffering a labrum tear that needed season-ending surgery, continuing what has turned into an eerie trend of Diamondbacks’ top prospects injuring their shoulders.

While Lawlar still has to prove himself at the upper levels — he had just a .212 average and .652 OPS in 20 games at Double-A — the most pressing question scouts have about him is whether he can stick at shortstop. But even there most scouts do not sound overly concerned. Several scouts mentioned Lawlar’s athleticism, tools and makeup, the combination of which leads them to believe he would continue to improve defensively.

“He has maturity, athletic ability, approach,” a Diamondbacks evaluator said. “He was playing against some older guys, but he was still one of the few guys at a young age that I see making adjustments from at-bat to at-bat rather than game to game. I think he has a chance to be a star.”
