Health care workers at East County's only hospital vote to unionize [Breaking]
Hundreds of health care workers at Sharp Grossmont have voted to form a union, a significant change for East County’s only hospital and the apparent conclusion to a sometimes contentious campaign that saw each side accuse the other of misconduct.
Each side has seven days to file an objection, according to Renée Saldaña, a spokesperson for SEIU-UHW. Only one vote has been voided so far, she wrote in an email. Employees in a variety of industries around the country have recently organized amid pressure from the pandemic, inflation and the threat of a recession. Sharp’s nurses are already unionized.to say managers were putting undue pressure on staff to vote “no” and spreading “misinformation” about the changes a union could bring. Hospital officials denied those accusations.
One employee who voted “no” was Shelli Bird, a materials management technician who’s spent more than 30 years at the hospital.
