The clocks will move forward one hour at 1 am on Sunday, March 20, meaning the official time will jump forward to 2am - but the change could have an impact on your health

The alarm on Monday morning might feel a bit more jarring than usual. This is because this weekend, we'll be springing forward.

A recent YouGov poll, conducted for recipe box company Gousto, revealed that the March clock change affects the sleep of more than a third of Brits. Others reported that their meal times and energy levels also suffer. However, when the clocks suddenly change, this entire system is thrown into disarray as its external cues, like natural light and darkness, are altered. The times we wake up, go to sleep, and eat meals are suddenly an hour off from what our bodies expect, which can have some unexpected impacts on our health.

There's a wealth of evidence indicating that shift work can lead to numerous health issues due to its disruption of our natural sleep-wake cycle. This includes an increased likelihood of developing sleep disorders, chronic fatigue, and a higher risk of long-term conditions such as heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

"Shifting time forward for around half a year is linked to chronic circadian misalignment," Dr Kelu shared with Metro. "It is compromising health." Alternatively, you could go outside for a short walk as you wake up to boost your alertness and help to reset your body clock.
