Three major health insurance providers in Ireland are increasing their prices, impacting an estimated 600,000 policyholders. This follows a series of price hikes and benefit reductions last year. The situation comes as a new insurer, Level Health, enters the market with promises of simpler, more affordable plans.

Around 600,000 people are facing price hikes on their health insurance premiums. Three major providers have announced rises in the price of their plans, despite a number of rises last year. Irish Life Health is increasing the cost of 130 of its plans, with Laya pushing up costs on 13 schemes, and VHI raising the premiums on 11 plans. A number of previously announced Irish Life Health premium rises already took effect from the start of this month.

Newer provider Level Health is also cutting some of the discounts it offers on two of its plans. Last year, there was a series of rate rises and cuts to benefits on a number of plans. Before the end of 2024, Irish Life Health announced a third price increase in just over 12 months, with customers facing an average hike of just under 4pc from the start of this year. Both VHI and Laya announced two price rises last year. A report from the Health Insurance Authority published in November found the average policy premium is now €1,712, although it said many policyholders could make savings by shopping around. This comes as new health insurer, Level Health, launched late last year, promising simplified and cheaper policies. Level Health is a 50/50 joint venture between insurer Aviva and its founders and senior executives which include a number of experienced industry veterans. The company has been co-founded by former Vhi chief executive, Oliver Tattan. The company claims it will simplify overcomplicated insurance policy options by offering just four plans, in comparison to the nearly 350 policy options currently available with existing insurer
