A tragic incident claimed the life of six‑year‑old Peter Mulcaire, who was killed in a 4x4 collision in Rathkeale. His funeral at St Mary's Church was marked by community tribute and a special Mass that highlighted his short but vibrant life.
Peter Mulcaire, a six‑year‑old boy from Abbeycourt, Rathkeale, Co Limerick, lost his life last Saturday when a 4x4 vehicle struck him on a local road.
The fatal incident occurred as he walked with his brother Jim to a local preschool, a first lesson in a new adventure for Peter. The family received a shock that reverberated through their small community, and their grief was soon joined by the wider public who came to pay their respects at St Mary's Church. The funeral Mass, held Wednesday, was a profoundly moving ceremony.
Fr Eamonn Fitzgibbon opened the service by recalling Peter's recent beginnings in education, noting how his brother had escorted him into his first preschool class.
"Jim walked Peter into a new adventure," he said, and added that Peter's charismatic energy would have brightened the classroom. In a touching eulogy, the priest spoke of Peter's brief life, pilfering joy and mischief from anyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
The service was uniquely personal: Peter's favorite songs - "You Are My Sunshine" and "Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star" - filled the air, and attendees wore costumes of his favourite cartoon characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and Peppa Pig. A song written specifically for Peter was also performed; its lyrics described him as his mommy's sunshine, daddy's pride, Jim's best friend, and Delilah's world.
For the funeral, the priest also baptised Peter's sister Delilah, ensuring the boy's presence was felt even as he lay in the casket. Surrounding the church, families erected large heart‑shaped floral tributes featuring photos of Peter and his loved ones. Symbols representing his short but wonderful life were placed beside the coffin: a pedal buggy, a bridle and rope, a chocolate bar, and a schoolbag, each echoing his passions for animals and learning.
Mourners carried the casket to a waiting hearse, accompanied by four white horses, and the procession climaxed with the arrival of four Lamborghini cars that guided the vehicle to the new cemetery in Rathkeale. Peter's mother, Kerrie, and father, James, along with siblings Jim and Delilah, expressed how their son left an elevated imprint on everyone.
"His smile could brighten any room," Kerrie said, echoing sentiments shared by the priest and attendees. Peter's beloved animals - dogs Fluffy, Rocky, and Molly, and ponies Spot and Millie - were mentioned as part of his dreams.
Additionally, his affinity for rainbow colours was remembered through a poem, "It's time for me to leave you, I won't say goodbye, Look for me in rainbows, high up in the sky.
" The fatal incident prompts an official investigation. Early reports note the driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested to provide a blood and urine sample amid suspicions of driving under the influence. While the driver is released pending laboratory results, authorities are pursuing a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the collision. In the days following the tragedy, the entire community stands together as grief is shared and comfort offered.
Peter's beloved remains rest in the new cemetery, yet his life continues to influence the heartbeat of Rathkeale, a testament to the profound impact even a short life can have on a community
