Phoenix community members react to the shooting at an LGBTQ club in Colorado. They point to harmful rhetoric against the LGBTQ community as a factor.
Since drag performances have been a front in the conservative culture war, Stevens said the LGBTQ community would be more vulnerable to violent attacks.
“It was very heartbreaking to wake up and know that while we were celebrating our leadership, our siblings over in Colorado had lost lives,” Flores said. “They like to say they are protesting, but really, they're harassing and intimidating people in community centers, libraries and coffee shops because of who we are and because of the strength and resilience of our community,” Woodbury said.
At least 32 transgender and gender-nonconforming people died in 2022, according to a report from the Human Rights Campaign released last week. The report found that 85% of transgender and gender-nonconforming victims of fatal violence since 2013 have been people of color. Flores said, “We do think that it happened on the eve of the Trans Day of Remembrance because of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and anti-LGBTQ policy. We believe that’s what is driving it.”
Woodbury said people, including public figures, need to bring down the temperature of their civil discourse and hate because these can lead to acts such as the shooting.
