Heimir Hallgrímsson: Troy Parrott Magical for Republic of Ireland in Austria Draw

Heimir Hallgrímsson calls Troy Parrott magical for Republic of Ireland after his goal in the 2-2 Nations League draw with Austria, who kept top spot in the group.

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson said it is magical to have Troy Parrott in a green shirt after the forward scored in the 2-2 Nations League draw with Austria at Aviva Stadium on Sunday. Austria equalised twice in the second half to stay top of the group.

Dublin-born Parrott opened the scoring and was substituted on 75 minutes, in between the two Austria goals that earned the visitors a point. Hallgrímsson said the substitution was the right call because the striker had taken knocks and was tiring after two previous games.

Parrott Goal Earns Hallgrímsson Praise

The Ireland manager described Parrott as a player with a special gift for scoring goals. He added that what sets Parrott apart from many other attackers is his defensive discipline and hard work for the team’s defensive structure.

Hallgrímsson also praised Parrott’s set-play work at both ends of the pitch. He said it is magical for Irish football to have the Dubliner in the green shirt and hoped the player would continue to improve.

Asked whether he should have left Parrott on to try to complete a hat-trick and keep Ireland on the front foot, Hallgrímsson was emphatic. He said absolutely not, explaining that Parrott had a knock, possibly a few knocks, and was getting tired, and that Ireland needed him again in three days.

The manager said Parrott showed on the pitch that few players can do what he did. He added that the goal would be watched again and again for many years and that such moments are why people love the game. He called it a shame that the goal did not deliver a win.

Finn Azaz Cleverness and Double Substitution

Hallgrímsson also hailed the cleverness of Finn Azaz. He pointed to Azaz’s quick thinking and problem solving as crucial for Ireland to gain an early advantage in the Group B2 contest.

Ireland led 2-0 at half-time but surrendered that lead in the second half. The manager replaced Adam Idah with Jayson Molumby and brought on Liam Kitching for Liam Scales in a double substitution on 62 minutes.

The Ireland boss said that before Austria scored, his side was losing control and organisation. He explained that the changes had been planned beforehand and that Ireland always intended to rotate, but needed to make the moves earlier than planned.

He said fresh feet can come at the cost of organisation when many new players arrive at the same time. He added that the staff had seen energy draining, which was understandable given everything that has been going on.

Rotation and Tiredness Before Israel Trip

Hallgrímsson said he was happy to be 2-0 up at half-time and had told reporters before the game that Austria are a high-energy team. He knew Ireland would need rotation and changes during the match.

He felt his team lost organisation due to tiredness and then began making mistakes, something he said the squad was not happy with. He added that the first half was good, the organisation was good, and Ireland showed they can perform at that level.

The manager said he expected Ireland to run out of gas at some point, though maybe not so quickly. He noted that the week had been physically difficult as well as mentally difficult, and that mental strain takes energy too.

Ireland now face a fourth game in this two-week window, against Israel in Serbia on Sunday. Hallgrímsson said the Austria result and the upcoming fixture shaped his thinking on substitutions and squad rotation.

He also said it was nice to feel the love of the Irish fans at Aviva Stadium. He added that he respected the reasons and actions of the Stop The Game protesters who made their feelings known before and during the game.
