The Boys in Green lost 2-0 to England in Dublin and face Lee Carsley's Three Lions again on Sunday
Heimir Hallgrimsson admits a date with England at Wembley will be one of the toughest tests of his managerial career to date.
Kane fumed that playing for your country should always come before club duties, as the Premier League’s heavyweight sides pull the strings behind the scenes. “It’s a good way to say it, but go and enjoy playing and give it a good game,” he said of the free hit for the Boys in Green who will contest the March playoffs regardless. “Coming from a win on Thursday, I think we’ve nothing to fear and we can try to play like we did in the second-half against Greece and Finland last month.”
Hallgrimsson labelled Thursday’s 1-0 home win over Finland as a jekyll and hyde performance; good in possession, less so out of it. Finland hit the post twice in the first-half and Caoimhin Kelleher saved a late penalty to secure the win, courtesy of Evan Ferguson’s headed first-half goal. When Ireland were good, they were decent but when they were bad, they were careless and Hallgrimsson knows they won’t get away with playing like that against England.
Hallgrimsson feels Ireland were overzealous in their press against the Finns and left themselves too open once they lost their shape. But he understands why, having drummed into his players all week that they need to start games better and not just start playing when it’s too late - like last month.
