Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson faced a disrupted press conference in Backa Topola as FAI officials clashed with Israeli journalists ahead of the Israel game.
Heimir Hallgrimsson said the Irish squad found calm in the remote rural surrounds of Backa Topola, the quiet setting for the storm around Ireland versus Israel. The Ireland manager spoke on the eve of the game in Backa Topola, where his press conference was cut short after clashes with Israeli journalists.
The FAI press officer ended the briefing after an Israeli journalist alleged racism against Irish players, a claim the FAI called completely untrue. Hallgrimsson and Irish reporters then finished their questions in a stadium dressing room.
Ireland Camp Finds Calm in Backa Topola
Hallgrimsson said the Irish group had found the calm and quiet they needed in the rural Hungarian town. The setting stood in contrast to the sound and fury that has swirled around Ireland versus Israel.
The squad also practised a traditional sort of mindfulness. Hallgrimsson asked Conor Coventry to lead the Irish squad in becalming prayer before last week game against Israel. Coventry has become known as Brother Coventry as a result.
That serenity did not last through the entirety of Hallgrimsson pre-match press conference. Ten minutes in, an Israeli journalist read from a pre-prepared question. She referenced the attempted hijack of the FlyDubai flight to Tel Aviv earlier this week.
The journalist asked Hallgrimsson about the people you support, saying their ideology is based on murder. The FAI press officer beside Hallgrimsson stepped in, saying the room was not doing questions like this and was concentrating on football.
The journalist continued her question, with only some words audible over the press officer responses. She mentioned innocent children and thousands of others. The press officer replied that they had respected her question at the last press conference and that Hallgrimsson had respected it the last time.
She eventually committed to a football question, asking Hallgrimsson if Finn Azaz would play tomorrow. Hallgrimsson said she would see tomorrow and that he would not reveal his team selection to the media.
Racism Allegation Ends Press Conference
The microphone then passed to another Israeli journalist, who last week asked Hallgrimsson about Ireland game against Nazi Germany in 1936. This time he made an allegation of racism against the Irish players, a claim that emerged in the Israeli media after last week game in Hungary.
The FAI press officer jumped in, telling the journalist the claim was completely untrue. The press officer said the press conference would finish there, to which the journalist protested that he was doing his job.
Amid the noise and scraping of chairs, the FAI press officer directed Hallgrimsson and the Irish journalists outside the door to conclude the interview. The press officer said the journalist had just broadcast a lie, while another FAI staff member took the microphone from the Israeli journalist.
The journalist protested that this was a press conference at which he had a right to ask questions. The FAI staff member responded that there is a difference between asking a question and making an accusation.
The Uefa official on the ground, the venue broadcast operations manager, was not in the room for the press conference, much to the frustration of some FAI staff.
Irish Media Finish Questions in Dressing Room
Hallgrimsson and the Irish media then stood in an open area outside the press conference room, trying to resume questions and some semblance of normality. The Irish manager was asked about player availability, having earlier said Dara O Shea was doubtful as he attends the birth of his child.
Hallgrimsson said contractions were starting when he was brought to a halt by a shout nearby. Someone called out not to touch them.
The Israeli journalist who made the racism allegation had followed the group out to the hall. He appeared to be seeking access to the Irish huddle with Hallgrimsson, citing his employer status as rights holders. He was engaged in a stand off with several FAI staff and threatened to call the police.
The FAI staff spoke without raising their voices, and one of them called for the Uefa official. Hallgrimsson and the Irish media were then taken down the corridor and ushered into a dressing room that had been commandeered for FAI use. The press conference was concluded there without interruption.
The journalists stood in a tight huddle around Hallgrimsson. The FAI head of security stood over a laptop in the background, with a stadium map and various official-looking documents spread out on the table before him. Hallgrimsson left to oversee the Irish training session.
Fallout Spreads Online After Flashpoint
Meanwhile, the press conference flashpoint spread quickly online. An Israeli journalist recorded footage of the FAI official taking the microphone from the Israeli journalist, and the journalist employer posted it online, calling it a disgraceful incident.
While their video included the allegation made in the question, the caption on the video said their journalist asked Irish players about allegedly swearing at the Israeli players.
Among the people to react to this video was Israel ambassador to the EU, who posted that they respect freedom of the press provided you only ask the questions they find comfortable to answer. The FAI chose to publish the entire 13-minute press conference, unedited, to their YouTube channel.
The media returned to the stadium at 5.
