British Home Secretary James Cleverly cancelled a scheduled meeting in London with Justice Minister Helen McEntee as the row on asylum seekers crossing Northern Irish border deepens
Justice Minister Helen McEntee has pulled out of the British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference in London amid growing tensions between the Irish and British governments on migration.
READ MORE: Irish and UK ministers set for showdown talks as refugees cross into Ireland over NI border “The Minister will meet with senior officials in Dublin today and regrets she won’t be in attendance at the BIIGC, which will be attended by the Tánaiste,” she said.It is expected that Ms McEntee will bring plans to the Government on Tuesday to stop asylum seekers travelling from Britain to Ireland via the North.
Tánaiste Micheál Martin suggested that this has led to an increased number of people seeking protection in Ireland. Taoiseach Simon Harris responded by saying that Ireland will not “provide a loophole for anybody else’s migration challenges”.
