Liz Truss’s only words to Wales’ first minister when she was PM were, “Hello Mark” during a memorial service for the Queen. 💬 “That’s the full script, verbatim,” Drakeford says. ⬇️ elliottengage interviews Mark Drakeford

. “It’s absolutely the last thing we need, another dose of austerity. We’ve had one run through it, it did not achieve all the things that were promised for it. And it left us all a great deal more fragile when it came to dealing with a global pandemic and other other events such as Brexit.”

Mr Drakeford makes the point that Wales has a large number of public sector employees, cuts on the scale predicted will mean “thousands of job losses” he says, inflicting further damage on the country’s economy. There is a chance that the scars left by the way Prince Charles took up his title in an elaborate ceremony in Caernarfon Castle could be reopened. It became a focal point for a growing wave of Welsh nationalism with protests. Mr Drakeford, 68, himself admits to his own small act of rebellion as a teenager at the time. His general message to Prince William is “there’s no rush”.

With his title William inherits at least one property in Wales and Drakeford can’t quite suppress a giggle when it is pointed out that as a second home it might be subject to the additional taxes the Welsh government wants to impose on holiday properties.
