Henrik Nánási conducts Fort Worth Symphony in new Shakespeare triptych, Tchaikovsky and Strauss | Review

Clarinetist Stanislav Chernyshev, left, guest conductor Henrik Nánási and bass Kevin Burdette perform with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra at Bass Performance Hall on March 25, 2022 in Fort Worth, Texas. FORT WORTH — Offhand, I can’t recall another concert when the conductor led the world premiere of a piece composed by his wife.

If you’re going to set words to music, surely the music should somehow elucidate or amplify the texts. In this case, I could hear no connection between vocal pitches — hardly a line in evidence — and Shakespeare’s words and sentiments. Maybe the texts didn’t matter. Kevin Burdette did what he could with a thankless task, with his brassy, gritty bass and clear diction. That he was sometimes drowned out by full-orchestra strings made me wonder if a more chamber-orchestra complement might have helped. At least some others in the audience were enthusiastic.
