Some of them hunker down indoors — not unlike most of us — while others thrive in their new winter wonderland.
If you thought you were stressed preparing for this weekend’s winter storm, just imagine what goes into getting more than 500 animals of more than 150 different species ready to ride out a potential blizzard.
If it looks like travel may be impeded following the storm, Hartwyk said the zoo will open its buildings to animal care staff, “who need to spend the night in order to make sure they’re here the next morning for their normal rounds.” A few animals — like the wolves, bison, and red panda — revel in the cold weather and frolic in the snowflakes, while others “are just quiet and chill out and don’t even come out of their buildings,” Hartwyk said.
