Downtown's 'enchilada red' library is ready to turn the page and reopen sometime very soon!
Almost three years ago, at the onset of the pandemic, downtown’sshut its doors. With few exceptions, Central Library has remained closed as it undergoes a $3 million overhaul to its first and third floors.
“We’re really excited about it,” said Scott Williams, a spokesman for the San Antonio Public Library. “And I know that excitement and tenor is matched by that of our community who’s waited a long time for Central Library to reopen. More than anything, we’re just thrilled to be able to bring this resource back online for the community.”While reopening plans are in sight for Central Library, an exact date is still not set.
The renovations to the six-floor library – which has stood out among a sea of mostly beige downtown towers with its dramatic diagonals and red color since 1995 – are part of a bond project passed by San Antonio voters in 2017.The Central Library closed along with the rest of the San Antonio Public Library system in March 2020 when the pandemic first hit the Alamo City.
Renovations, which began in September 2021, were supposed to be completed by Mid-2022. The delays have largely been caused by industry-wide material shortages, Williams said. For example, the new informational desk on the first floor features custom millwork. However, it’s been difficult to source the wood needed to complete it.Gloria Ferniz/Gloria Ferniz/Express-News photo
