Weather is always a factor Hermann Park Conservancy’s annual “Hats in the Park”...

Attendees are shown during the 13th annual Hats in the Park at the McGovern Centennial Gardens Thursday, March 24, 2022, in Houston.Weather is always a factor Hermann Park Conservancy’s annual “Hats in the Park” luncheon. Footwear is, too.

Hermann Park Conservancy President and CEO Doreen Stoller does not cancel the organization’s outdoor events. Forecasts be damned. Days before Thursday’s luncheon she sent an email reminding table hosts of the event’s special after-party: a champagne train ride through Hermann Park to preview the non-profit’s tranformational project, the Commons.

Strong gusts of wind made keeping hats in place a challenge. Co-chair Christine Falgout-Gutknecht nearly lost hers onstage during the program’s brief remarks. “Let the record show I tried,” she joked before removing it. She and fellow chairs Melissa Holman Juneau and Lori Sarofim raised $492,287. Turner’s quick cameo has become tradition. He noted Hermann Park Conservancy’s 30th anniversary; the organization was founded in 1992 by residents dedicated to the stewardship and improvement of the now 100-year-old Hermann Park. That can’t be said today. In 2019 Conservancy leadership launched a $51 million “Play Your Park” campaign, which added a Fund for Public Art, community-requested McWilliams Dog Park and the Commons to the Park’s master plan.
