Heysham 1 power station to stay open for another two years after safety inspections
The Heysham 1 nuclear power station will continue operating for another two years, EDF has announced.
EDF's nuclear station in Hartlepool is also to operate for another two years on the same basis. The company the decision means another two years of generating "zero-carbon electricity" which will support energy security and reduce demand for imports while lowering carbon emissions. According to EDF, the additional 29TWh of electricity these stations could generate over that two-year period could help to displace 6billion cubic metres of gas. The carbon avoided from this displacement, it says, is 10million tonnes and taking 5m cars off the UK’s roads for a year.
It says the decision has been made after a rigorous review by EDF of the technical and commercial cases for life extension. In particular, positive inspections of the graphite reactor cores during 2022 have increased confidence that the station can continue to meet stringent regulatory standards.
