GPs across the country diagnosed 1,000 cases of the disease every week in June

The number of people diagnosed with whooping cough is on the rise - and Yorkshire has two major hotspots.

Around half of all the cases in England were in those aged 15 or over, who usually get a mild illness. However, 262 cases were in babies under three-months-old who are most at risk of serious complications, and the UKHSA has confirmed nine babies have died in England since the outbreak began. According to UKHSA, whooping cough is a cyclical disease and a peak year has been "overdue". It adds that the rise in cases has also been assisted by falling vaccination rates, with coverage of the vaccination offered to pregnant women to protect newborn infants down to 59 per cent as of March, compared to the peak coverage of 73 per cent in 2017.

"With cases continuing to rise and sadly nine infant deaths since the outbreak began last November, ensuring women are vaccinated appropriately in pregnancy has never been more important. Our thoughts and condolences are with those families who have so tragically lost their baby.
