Planned changes to the Highway Code are expected to come in over the summer.

Currently available technology is 'assistive', which means drivers should always retain control, the DfT said. She also claimed their use "revolutionise the way we travel, making our future journeys greener, safer and more reliable". Eventually, self-driving technology could "improve road safety across Britain by reducing human error, which is a contributory factor in 88% of all recorded road collisions," the government said.
