Blackburn Hindu community's pride as Rishi Sunak becomes the first British-Asian Prime Minister
Having officially kissed the King's hand, Rishi Sunak has become the 57th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
"The Indian leader, PM Modi was the first to congratulate Rishi Sunak on becoming Prime Minister and he's so proud to have a Hindu compeer, if you like, at No. 10. We are very pleased and excited about it." Andy Joss is the owner of The Rock Box, a 'classic rock and blues bar' on King William St. He said he "isn't very political" but as a business owner, hopes the new leader will work to support people that need it this winter.
"I think we're ready for change, aren't we? So maybe he'll be that change that we need." Heather also spoke about Mr Sunak's time as Chancellor of the Exchequer from February 2020 to July 2022. Prior to Mr Sunak's new appointment and as the former PM Liz Truss resigned last Friday , many members of the public began calling for a General Election, despite one scheduled only to happen no later than January 2025. Mum, Sarah believes that Mr Sunk will call for a General Election, despite only just having taken up his new role.
"I would like to think that he will do alright, because we need somebody at the helm at the moment and I couldn't think that we would want a General Election, because that's six weeks of no government again. So, fingers crossed he can do his job." The news of Mr Sunak's appointment as Prime Minister comes only days after the former PM, Liz Truss resigned from the post after only 44 days. As the country dealt with a 'period of limbo' until a new leader was elected, rumours of candidates from the Conservative party who would replace the former PM began to emerge.
"We'll just see how it goes, that's all we can do, just give him a chance. Whether he'll be any good or not, I just don't know.
