The health technology assessment from the Health Information and Quality Authority says the HSE should check for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) as part of the 'heel prick' test

The health technology assessment from the Health Information and Quality Authority says the HSE should check for severe combined immunodeficiency as part of the 'heel prick' test.

Currently, the national newborn bloodspot screening programme checks for nine conditions, within the first 72 to 120 hours of life.It causes the child to have a weakened immune system and be very vulnerable to infection.HIQA has estimated that introducing the screening for all types of SCID would cost the HSE €3.6 million over five years.

Dr Máirín Ryan, HIQA's Deputy CEO and Director of Health Technology Assessment, said that newborn screening for all SCID types through the National Newborn Bloodspot Screening Programme will help find infants before they present clinically with infections, allowing for earlier access to potentially curative treatment.

She said that in this way, the benefits of screening can be considerable for children with SCID and their families. Since May last year, the programme screens for one type of SCID that currently accounts for around half of cases here.
