The case of mum-of-two Lynette Joy Simms, which had Australia gripped for four decades, was put back under the spotlight when it became the subject of a 16-part crime series podcast
Lynette Joy Simms and Chris Dawson started out as childhood sweethearts and ended up as a crime case that would grip Australia for 40 years.
On 8 January 1982, Lynette called her mum and arranged to meet her and other family members the next day at Northbridge Baths, a tidal swimming area where Dawson was a part-time lifeguard. But she never showed up. Dawson’s claims didn’t ring true for her family or the police. But even though JC was living in his home, he played the concerned husband and made several appeals for Lynette’s safe return. He even put an advert in a paper saying, “Lyn I love you, we all miss you. Please ring. We want you home. Chris.”
‘Slashed’ cardigan in yard In 2000, the yard at their former Bayview home was partially excavated. A pink cardigan was found and appeared to have been slashed with a knife – but it didn’t have Lynette’s DNA on it. The podcast was downloaded close to 30 million times worldwide and was number one in the charts in several countries, including the UK. It made the public pressure to find answers stronger than ever.
JC testified that when she was staying with Dawson and Lynette, they would have sex when Lynette had fallen asleep – or in the car while he was giving her driving lessons. JC also said Dawson would call his wife cruel names behind her back.He said Dawson had lied about getting phone calls from his missing wife and that sightings of her were “wholly unreliable”.
