Holycross Dethrone Loughmore as Scotstown, Dungannon and Kerry Stars Steal the Weekend
GAA, Hurling, Football

Holycross-Ballycahill dethroned back-to-back Tipperary hurling champions Loughmore-Castleiney with a thrilling eight-goal win, while Dungannon Clarkes forced a dramatic replay against Loughmacrory in Tyrone, Scotstown demolished Corduff by 36 points in Monaghan, and Kerry stars David Clifford and Paul Murphy landed late match-winners for their clubs.

Loughmore-Castleiney surrendered the Tipperary senior hurling championship over the weekend after an eight-goal thriller against Holycross-Ballycahill, who claimed a 4-25 to 4-18 victory in the preliminary quarter-final.

Holycross had entered the contest as clear favourites for the county crown, and they reinforced that billing with a coming-of-age display that avenged their 2025 county semi-final and 2026 Mid final defeats at the hands of the back-to-back champions. John McGrath produced 2-8 for Loughmore, including 2-2 from play, while his brother Liam McGrath contributed 2-1, but the challengers enjoyed a wider spread of scoring threats.

Darragh Woods led the charge with 1-8, supported by Joe Caesar and Tipperary U20 Robbie Ryan, who each tallied 1-4. Bryan O'Mara excelled at centre-back with 0-2, and full-back Cathal Barrett added a fortuitous goal before departing through injury late on.

Holycross now look well placed to push on, though Thurles Sarsfields, who beat them in the group stage, and Moycarkey-Borris are also in the mix, while last year's runners-up Nenagh Éire Óg have been hit by an injury to Jake Morris. Loughmore will switch focus to the football championship quarter-finals, carrying with them a proud record of 10 county titles split evenly between hurling and football over the past two decades.

In Tyrone, Dungannon Clarkes produced one of the championship's most dramatic comebacks against defending champions Loughmacrory in Pomeroy, forcing a replay with the final puck of the game. Trailing 1-9 to 0-4 at half-time, the 2020 county champions looked destined for an early exit before two quick goals drew them level with six minutes left.

Loughmacrory responded with three points to edge back in front, but Dungannon worked a short 45 to Dalaigh Jones, who launched a stunning strike to the top corner to make it 1-19 to 4-10. Dungannon's revival under new manager Damian McErlain, who took charge in late July after James Slater stepped down, has already steered them clear of a relegation scare and now threatens the reign of a Loughmacrory side coached by Derry boss Ciaran Meenagh.

Kerry's inter-county stars once again proved decisive in the club championships, with David Clifford and Paul Murphy delivering late match-winning contributions. At the Dr Crokes grounds in Killarney, Clifford amassed a 16-point haul in the intermediate semi-final, including the decisive late strike with his right boot that edged them past the opposition by 2-25 to 2-24. Combined with brother Paudie's five-point contribution, the result sends Fossa into a third intermediate decider in four seasons.

The following evening at another Killarney venue, defender Paul Murphy surged forward from centre-back to clip over a buzzer-beater that gave Rathmore a 1-14 to 0-16 victory over Austin Stacks in the senior semi-final, booking a last-four clash the following weekend. Elsewhere, Ulster champions Scotstown produced a crushing 5-26 to 1-3 win over Corduff in the Monaghan senior championship group stages, a 36-point demolition that avenged last year's defeat at the same venue.

Leading 1-18 to 1-1 at half-time without the suspended Jason McGee and Keith McEnaney, Corduff, managed by Rory Gallagher with former Tyrone coach Peter Donnelly assisting, had entered the contest on the back of a narrow loss to Carrickmacross and now face an uphill battle to progress from the group
