“It’s just violent and useless,” said one neighborhood resident that saw dozens of police officers circling a homeless encampment with two or three people. 'They don’t disturb us. I’m sad for what is happening to them. They are not the problem.”
“They’re wasting money on this when they could be using it to solve the problem,” she said. “I don’t want wrap-around services. I want an apartment I can afford to live in.”
Vee said she became homeless two years ago after losing her apartment in Gravesend and had been sleeping mostly on the streets and in the subways since. "If you live from paycheck to paycheck this could happen to you with like one accident or really nasty illness," she said., two weeks into the mayor’s initiative, just five homeless people had come indoors through the sweeps, though hundreds more were displaced. The Adams administration has declined repeated requests to provide an updated count of how many people entered city shelters since then.
