With fewer than one in 10 patients able to leave, some North-West hospitals are struggling to cope.

"Get them up, get them out of bed every morning, get them dressed… they all communicate better together and it just keeps them really positive while they're in hospital," she says. As a whole, the North-West was the worst region in England for discharges, lying 11% below the national average. "It is not a safe place to get them back to we will not send patients home to something which is unsafe."
