One of the people held hostage for hours has been released uninjured from a Texas synagogue during a Shabbat religious service, US officials say
Dallas mayor said that as a precaution, Dallas police is deploying additional patrols to synagogues and other sites.
"Shortly after 5:00 pm , a male hostage was released uninjured," the Colleyville police department said in a statement. Authorities are still trying to understand the precise motive for the attack. But some US officials say the hostage taker is demanding the release of a Pakistani neuroscientist, Aafia Siddiqui, who was convicted of trying to kill US Army officers in Afghanistan.
The president of the Union for Reform Judaism, Rabbi Rick Jacobs, said on Twitter the union was "very grateful to law enforcement who are working to free the hostages."
