The Met Office and health bosses have escalated a warning over the upcoming heatwave to an 'amber alert'. The yellow alert issued on Wednesday by the UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office has been escalated to an amber alert in five regions, including the East Midlands.
The UK Health Security Agency said the decision to move to an amber alert has been made due to latest Met Office forecasts, which indicate there is a high likelihood that forecasted temperatures will be reached rapidly over the weekend in the East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, South East and South West.
These regions are also likely to see high overnight temperatures. An amber alert indicates that weather impacts are likely to be felt across the whole health service, and there may begin to be some health impacts across the wider population, not just the most vulnerable. An Iberian plume whipped up by a block of high pressure across the UK is expected to lead to some blazing temperatures over the weekend and into next week.
The hot and dry weather is also expected to last into next week. The Met Office has also issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms in a number of regions from 2pm to 9pm on Saturday.
