Theo Henderson speaks during a vigil organized by We The Unhoused on the steps of Los Angeles City Hall on March 12, 2022.
“They just walked on like it was every day as usual,” he said. “It made me realize how disconnected the housed community is.” People experiencing homelessness are dying at an increasing rate in Los Angeles. A preliminary count from the LA County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner found that 1,612 unhoused people died in 2021. Five years ago, that number was just under 1,000. Advocates believe 2022 will surpass last year’s numbers due to a lack of affordable housing and other support services.
Michael Sintleton, a local artist, said the event humanized unhoused people while also providing a platform for those who knew them to speak about their impact.Across the street, tents and other forms of shelter filled the sidewalk.Tents along North Spring Street are photographed near a vigil organized by We The Unhoused on the steps of Los Angeles City Hall on March 12, 2022.
“The survivor's guilt is real,” he said. “I lived outside for three years, and that's a fraction of the time that most people who live outside in LA. I know people that have been outside five, 10, 15 years, and here I am. I got a place and I made it out alive.” Sade Kammen, a graduate student studying social work at the University of Southern California spoke about her friend Milo who died. Kammen also works in skid row, a place that’s become the epicenter of the unhoused crisis.
