With that said, Stanford’s research found that Latino-owned businesses, in Houston and across the nation, are less likely to be profitable than white-owned businesses, and more likely to have outstanding debt. The researchers studied companies that had at least one employee, other than the owner, and $10,000 in annual revenues.
Access to cash was a critical issue for many Latino business owners during the pandemic, she said, and Latino business owners were more likely than white business owners to turn to personal savings, credit cards and home equity loans as a result. Overall, two-thirds of Latino-owned businesses in the Houston metro area reported negative effects from the pandemic — including supply chain disruptions and increased costs as well as lower revenues — compared to 60 percent of white-owned businesses.
