The weather service classified the tornado as an EF3. It the strongest tornado to strike Harris County since an F3 tornado developed in La Porte in March 2002, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration database of recorded tornadoes.Since 1950, there have only been 10 tornadoes in Harris County, including Tuesday's, that were measured as an F3, EF3 or above.
Tornado ratings are based on damage assessment conducted in the wake of a tornado. Damages are measured using the Fujita scale, or its successor the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which is used to provide an estimate of a tornado's maximum wind speeds. The weather service said the tornado traveled up to 18 miles through parts of Houston, Pasadena and Deer Park before it dissipated. The tornado was more than two-thirds of a mile wide.
The weather service said it planned to release a more detailed summary about the tornado Wednesday night.
