Richard Spiller was sentenced to 45 years in prison after he shot an 8-year-old boy in the knee following an argument his son and the boy got into while playing near the Third Ward area.

Reports say that an 8-year-old boy had been playing with a basketball with Spiller's son who was almost 4 years older. Records state Spiller left the home and returned with a van full of people to continue the argument. He came back a third time and started shooting at the 8-year-old's family while they were on the porch of a neighbor's home.Officials say Spiller struck the boy in his knee, then ran away. The young boy survived the gunshot."He turned a kids’ fight into a gunfight," said Assistant District Attorney Shanice Newton, who prosecuted the case in the four-day trial.
