If anyone knows how to express that kind of anything-can-happen endorphin rush onstage, it’s Hill, who will officially release “Saturday Night” this Saturday at the Continental Club opening for longtime bassist turned frontman Mark Riddell.
For much longer than that — more than 25 years now — Hill has led the Allen Oldies Band, a good-timin’ bunch whose action-packed concerts essentially function on two levels: tailfeather-friendly danceathons that can stretch upwards of two hours ; and doctorate-level seminars on how to mine nuggets of pop-rock gold from decades of forgettable airwave fodder.
The thing that may have changed the most in all Hill’s time in the biz is what to do with that song once it’s recorded. For years, musicians would write songs until they had enough for another album, but that business model no longer makes as much sense as it once did. “I'd rather just write a song and just let it find its way in the world,” he says. “If it resonates with somebody and they pass it on to a friend, that that means way more to me than some editor at Spotify [sic] saying, ‘This is cool today.’
