The name Crown Paints is one of the best-known in the industry and its base in Darwen dates back almost 250 years.
Towards the end of the war Walpamur supplied 30,000 gallons of paint after it was decided that all Allied Aircraft should be painted with five distinctive black and white stripes to reduce the danger of friendly fire incidents.
The following comes from the Cotton Town website which documents the history of Blackburn with Darwen: During World War Two Walpamur was engaged on war work producing special paints and dope for aircraft. They were asked to produce 90,000 gallons of white paint for the D-Day landings of 1944. All Allied aircraft had to be painted with white stripes. 30,000 gallons were produced in a week and transported from the factory in a fleet of US Army lorries.In 2008 Akzo Nobel bought Dulux manufacturer ICI which led to concerns being raised that Akzo would have a monopoly.
