Tshiunza moved to Wales from the DRC as a child and is now 'living a dream' - even if some family members are still getting up to speed

Tshiunza was born in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2002. The city’s previous claim to sporting fame as the venue for the 1974 Rumble in the Jungle, George Foreman versus Muhammad Ali.

The young Tshiunza moved to Wales as a child, as his family with five children fled a civil war that took the life of millions. He and two of his four older sisters shared a mattress on the floor of a one-bedroomed Cardiff flat. He later went to Whitchurch High School, alma mater of sporting greats Gareth Bale, Geraint Thomas and Sam Warburton. Then he joined Exeter Chiefs, thanks to a connection with Exeter University.

But Tshiunza recalled in a break from training in Nice on Thursday how he “didn’t even know what rugby was in 2010”, and he has not quite got his relatives onside, even now. “Even my family that come to the current games, they haven’t got a clue, they are like ‘where’s Christ, where’s Christ? Oh, good job, you did something well today’. They don’t know the rules but I am glad they can come and support.

You can find on the internet a link between them back in May 2016, in the Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan schools under-15s high jump won by Tshiunza with Grady in sixth place. They then played in age-grade rugby together.
